Unless you have an interchangeable lens camera, there’s no way for you to take macro, fish eye or wide angle pictures from your smartphone. The solution? Snap-on lenses. Today we will take a look at the Aukey PL-A1 Optic 3-in-1 Smartphone Lens Set and the type of pictures you can take. [Note: This is not from a professional standpoint. Thus no technical terms will be used. ]
Looks and Unboxing
The Aukey PL-A1 Optic 3-in-1 Smartphone Lens Set is a set of lenses that you can attach to your smartphone. The lenses are: wide angle, macro and fish eye. These lenses give you the ability to take the photos with the respective effect. Let’s take a look at the packaging and lenses.
Using the Aukey PL-A1 Optic 3-in-1 Smartphone Lens Set was a straightforward affair. Attach the lens to the lens holder and clip it to your phone. The sample images below are taken from a recent trip to Bangkok, Thailand.

You can see that with the wide angle lens, it was able to take in a flag pole on the left and a tree on the right.

I have to say, I was impressed by the images taken. Let’s start with the wide angle. I think out of the three lenses, this is the most practical. It’s useful when you have to squeeze big groups of people or wide buildings. Next we have the fisheye lens. To tell you the truth, I did not know the reason for a fisheye lens when taking these pictures. My only knowledge was that it was supposed to take warped images for artistic purposes. And it did. Moving on to the macro lens. I feel that you could get very creative with a macro lens. It’s as if your smart phone suddenly became a portable microscope. The details in the images are commendable.
The one area that can be improved is the diameter of the lens. As you can see in some of the images above, there are some black corners. This is the result of the Aukey lens only just covering the smartphone camera lens.
So, let’s set expectations right. If you’re an enthusiast or a professional in photography, this is no replacement for actual interchangeable wide angle/fisheye/macro lenses. The reason why you would get this smartphone lens set is to have a taste of what these different lenses can do. Generally, I think that this is more of a fun accessory to have. Nevertheless, a person with a knack of photography may be able to get the most out of it.
Where to buy
This lens came out a couple of years back and at the moment of writing, it’s difficult to find stores that stock it. So do get one before it runs out.
