How to create an Alexa Skill

You’ve read about the Alexa Skill Blueprints and you’re excited to create one. My friend, you’ve come to the right place. Today we will go through the simple steps on exactly how to do that. Before we proceed, feel free to visit the official Alexa Skill Blueprints page for the steps as the steps covered here are based on that but with some added commentary.

First, you need to have an Alexa device. So we’re talking about devices like the Echo Dot, Show, Spot or Standard Echo. Other brands are ok too as long as its Alexa enabled.

Echo family.

Next sign into your Amazon account at the Alexa Skill Blueprints page. If you don’t have one, you can create one on the spot.

Sign in first.

On the Alexa Blueprints page, there are four categories: Storyteller, At Home, Learning & Knowledge and Fun & Games. Let’s choose Inspirations under Fun & Games for this example.

Plenty of options to choose from.

Click ‘Make Your Own’.

There are samples of each skill.

As the name implies, Inspirations is meant for you to enter your favourite quotes. It could be motivational or even something profound your friend said.

My inspiration.

Next, name your skill. For this example, we’ve named it “Inspirations Today”. Click ‘Create Skill’ and wait for the confirmation. And you’re done!

Name your skill.

Go over to your Alexa device and say “Alexa, open Inspirations Today” and she’ll repeat the quote followed by the author. How cool is that? Now that you’ve created one, it’s time to explore the rest of the skills!
