Philips Hue bulbs are hard to come by in Malaysia partly because it isn’t officially available. If you’re hunting for one, the most likely place you’re going to find it is in an [i]Store. A visit to the Publika branch recently yielded a White and Color Ambiance Starter kit together with some standalone Hue bulbs.
The one thing I didn’t check further was whether the started kit and extension bulbs were 2nd or 3rd generation. But after doing some comparison online on the packaging, I’ve deduced that it is 2nd generation. Why I brought this up is because of the pricing which I will elaborate below.
2nd Generation Hue
White and Color Ambiance Starter kit is RM1199. An Extension bulb is RM379.
Amazon (Price listed is after shipping and tax fees to Malaysia)
3rd Generation Hue
White and Color Ambiance Starter kit is USD$190 (RM815). An Extension bulb is USD$68.54 (RM292).
If you compare this to the price listed on Amazon, you’d wonder why anyone would buy it from the [i]Store. On Amazon the 3rd generation Hue White and Color Ambiance Starter kit is cheaper by RM384. While the 3rd generation extension bulb is cheaper by RM87.
Well I guess if you’ve been searching high and low for the Hue smart bulb system, and if price isn’t a hindrance, then by all means purchase one. But if you wanna save a few hundred ringgit and get the latest generation of Hue, then I’d suggest to order from Amazon.
As always folks, do your research and compare prices before purchasing.
