IKEA introduces its smart home solution

IKEA recently announced their smarthome products in the form of smart lighting. Named TRÅDFRI (Sweedish for ‘wire free’), these new range include smart bulbs, a remote control, a gateway, a dimming device and a motion sensor.

Here is a brief overview of the products:

Bulbs

LED Panel

Remote Control

Actions: Dim, Turn off and Turn on.
Able to control up to 10 bulbs.

Gateway

Needed to control the bulbs via the Trådfri app.
Trådfri app supports Android and iOS.

Motion Sensor

Can be set for day or night mode.
The light turns off after 1, 5 or 10 minutes depending on how you set the motion sensor.

Dimming Device

Looks like a hockey puck.
Maximum range of 33 ft.

The gateway kit(2 LED bulbs, A Gateway, Remote Control) comes in at a price of USD79.99 (RM355). Compare this with Phillips Hue White Ambience Starter Kit(2 bulbs, A Bridge, Dimmer Switch) at a price of USD129 (RM570) and you’ll see why Ikea’s offering has better potential based on the cost of barriers to entry.

Currently it is available in selected countries namely in US, UK and Sweeden. Let’s hope IKEA Malaysia brings it here soon!
